Buena Compañía ACEO

"Buena Compañía" (In Good Company)
aprox. 6.4 cm x 9 cm (2.5" x 3.5")

........

I finished this ACEO in an hour, approximately. I needed to finish something, once again. It’s been too long since I painted for the last time and I was already feeling desperate to do it again. I took the reference photo from a supermarket flier, but the glass contents was originally red. I changed it to green because I thought it was going to be too monotonous at the end if everything was red. I liked the experience of painting glass, so if I get to find a good photo of something on glass, I’m going to try it again soon.

I was going to leave the background white, but it looked terrible, the red on the cherries had nowhere to come out from, it looked completely out of place. So, remembering some of the things that I have read in one of the very many blogs that I visit, I added red to the it, and it works better (really! You can’t imagine how it was before!)

And the most important conclusion I get is that, it’s easier to paint glass, than to paint its liquid content, with cp’s.

¡Vaya, qué reto!

Verduras Veraniegas (Summer Veggies)
aprox. 24 cm x 9.4 cm (9.4" x 3.7")

...
Yes, wow, what a challenge. I didn’t think it was going to be this difficult. So difficult I couldn’t reach Karin Jurick’s deadline and my painting is not shown on DSFDF (at the time of the deadline only the tomatoes part was ready). Oh, well...
I wrote a draft of this post while waiting for the end of my daughter’s today’s ballet class (yes, the original post was ‘hand-made’, on a couple of pages of my agenda).
While I was painting this piece, my emotions were swinging between excitement and deception: “how nice it’s turning out this time!”, “Oh, no! I ruined it!”, “No, it’s still OK, I like it”, “O my God! What did I do!?”, and so on. Painting is emotionally exhausting for me. But still I love to. After forgetting the last trauma, I get the excitement of painting, over and over again, and start once again with lots of faith on myself. What would be our fate without it…?
...And I hope all fathers had a very nice Father's Day celebration last Sunday!

This is a short post. Just to let you know that my dear uncle Willy, my mother’s youngest brother, now has a blog! He is a great, GREAT artist, but he dedicates to architecture for a living and doesn’t paint as much as, from my point of view, he should. He is very talented, and he also dominates many techniques (do I admire him or what?) He learned with a great teacher, his uncle José Gutiérrez Infantas* (whom I had no luck to know, I mean, I saw him a couple of times when he was already very old-->he dyed almost at 100 years old in 1997), and started since his early childhood (ever since he was 3 or 4 years old his abilities started to bloom).

And I, that am dying to paint like he does, can’t believe he can't devote more time to art. So I try that he does, that he shares his artwork and become known. An interesting history of his life can be found in this page, as well as a few photos of his artwork. Here is his blog. Please stop by his blog and check his art!

*He was professor at the Fine Arts School of Lima, and a restorer

Una Anémona Terminada

"Anémona"
aprox. 16 cm x 23 cm (6.4" x 9.2")

I’m done. I’m happy with the final result, of course it can always be better, but I’m more than happy anyway. This is the most pleasurable kind of piece for me, for many reasons:
(1) The subject. It was almost like painting a plant, which I LOVE (but I suspect this subject might not be liked by many. Although anemones became ‘fashionable’ since we saw “Finding Nemo”, this one is more in a National Geographic’s style rather than in a Hollywood-like style. I even think many people will say “what a weird bug” :)
(2) In addition, I enjoyed painting over dark paper (something I’m not used to do, in fact, this is the first time I work on black paper).
(3) And the ratio effort & time/result is very comforting (only two mornings). That, for me, is a record.
Once in a while, between challenges (I’m referring to auto-imposed personal challenges), I find it’s worth it to indulge myself like this (or like this, which took me 1 afternoon).

"..."

Today, I’m going to do something too daring as per my philosophy. Something that I have already done: post a work in progress. I know about the tension this means, the raise in self-inflicted pressure because the painting MUST now turn out well.
But my last post is a little bit boring, so I’d better post something a bit more creative. My inspiration to paint this creature came from reading a bed time book to my daughter (Winnie Pooh’s encyclopedia of marine animals). Photos are cute. That’s where I got my little model.
Another part of my inspiration came from Leslie’s Art Blog. When I saw her drawing I was fascinated and told myself that someday I ‘d have to try something on that style. Now I’m on that, I hope at the end I’ll be happy with the outcome. We’ll see… (now is when I close my eyes and click on "publish post")
