Mi primer óleo

Ejercicio con caracola de mar - Exercise with seashell
óleo sobre lienzo, 30 cm x 30 cm - oil on canvas, appx. 12" x 12"

............

This is my first painting exercise with oil paintings. As per what I have read recently, I did it “alla prima”, it is, non stop from beginning to end, in one and only “sitting”. I actually started it at painting class: there I did the drawing of the things I took there; I decided, together with the teacher, about the background and foreground colors (I was worried about what colors to use, because I was already using complementary colors on the figures. –The answer for the background was to use the same colors used in a value gradient, and for the foreground, white. But I added a little bit of color, because pure white seemed to me like too much contrast).

After finishing the drawing, the teacher told me to add a sort of gouache of the colors that I was going to use later, over every corresponding zone: turpentine with some oil of each color. The idea is that this gouache cover the whole canvas, so as to “cure” it.

After the class all I had done was that, only “gouaches”, and the next class was scheduled for Aug. 4 (this week we have celebrated Peru’s Hollidays and we had no classes). My frenzied/desperate spirit was not going to be able to resist that long without seeing it finished, so I finished 99% of it at home (today I just signed it and covered a little bit of white on the reflex of the blue jar). It was quite an experience, a total “trance”. It was difficult, and I decided that I could and should finish that same day, because I was not going to have any kind of help and because anyway I was not going to be able to wait until the next class!

How about that?

Hi Carolina. You certainly do GOOD work! I like your painting VERY much and enjoy how you worked your seashells into your primero ala prima. I especially like how you painted your background. Now what? Pencils, oils or BOTH?

Talk to you later!

Hi Ken!
I am so glad to see you around :) Thank you for your immensely kind comment. The background was certaily the part that I enjoyed most to do, I went wild painting that part, almost out of control :)
CPs or oils? who knows... I enjoy cps a lot, but I want to learn oils too... so, let's see what happens!
Best regards,
Carolina

¡Hola Mar!
Carolina

Carolina!

For your first time with oils you did great!!

I love the look of the background. It has such a great old-world texture to it, almost like leather!

I wish my walls looked like that!

Keep it up!

Hi Dean!
Thanks for your sincerity, I REALLY appreciate that :)
The background was the part I enjoyed the most, mainly because I was pretty "sure" of what I was doing, the rest of the painting was hard, because I hadn't done it before and because I had no one -nor I didn't have information about how to do it- to tell me what/how to do.
Thanks for the encouragement :)
Carolina
