Desde el auto

Estos dibujos los hice otra vez un par de veces que estuve esperando a mi hija. Son de cuando esperaba en el auto, y sólo tenía una hora (últimamente bajo y la espero en la academia de ballet y son dos horas).

Como alguien algo perceptivo se habrá podido dar cuenta, últimamente no tengo mucho tiempo. Entre las traducciones (que en todo el año no he tenido muchas), y las actividades de fin de año, la pintura está quedando un poco relegada. ¡Y la extraño mucho!!!!

In the car

I did these drawings once again a couple of times I was waiting for my daughter. They're from when I used to wait in the car, and I only had one hour (lately I wait inside the ballet academy and I have two hours).

As someone with experience in the perceptive department would have already noticed, lately I don't have much time. Between the translations (that I haven't had many during the year), and the year end activities, painting is being a bit consigned to oblivion, and I'm missing it so much!!!

Aquí va otro dibujo, hecho esta vez esperando a que mi hija termine sus clases de ballet. Comencé con luz natural desde la izquierda, y terminé con luz artificial desde el centro y la derecha. Ni modo.

Como comenté en el post anterior a este (en la sección de comentarios), estoy comenzando a hacer los dibujos en frente de otras personas. Hasta ahora los hacía sola en el auto o en la sala de espera totalmente a solas. Pero creo que me estoy volviendo un poco exhibicionista... Felizmente que se me dio por esto, y no por bailar encima de una mesa...

(Y les voy a adelantar algo que me ha emocionado muchísimo ... gané un sorteo en el blog de Milly. ¡Estoy super felíz! :)

As the bottle is bent...

Here is another sketch, done this time while waiting for my daughter to finish her ballet classes. I started with natural light from the left, and ended with artificial light from the middle and right. Oh well.

As I mentioned on the previos post (in the comments section), I'm starting to sketch in front of other people. Until now, I used to sketch alone in the car or in the waiting room completely alone. But I think I'm turning into an exhibitionist... good I turned into doing this and not on dancing on top of a table...

(And I'll tell you in advance of something that has excited me a lot... I won a giveaway on Milly's blog. I'm so happy!!! :)

Botella de Alcohol y Mi Rodilla

Estoy trabajando en casa, como suelo hacerlo normalmente que tengo algún encargo (traducciones), pegada a la computadora, avanzando y también revisando correos, blogs y el bendito facebook. No tengo mucho tiempo para pintar últimamente, así que hoy pongo algo que hice hace unos días. Estos dibujos son parte de las cosas que hago mientras espero a mis hijos. De los presentables, claro :) La suerte que tengo es que no hay gente alrededor y tengo cierta tranquilidad para hacerlos y no pasar por loca. Y a veces también hago algunos en el auto (la botella de alcohol la hice en el auto justamente, la otra a solas esperando).
Y tengo que anunciarlo oficialmente: me retiré de las clases de pintura :( No tengo suficiente tiempo ahora a finales de año, y quisiera también buscar algo un poco más "académico". Me da penita, pero, ni modo...

Alcohol Bottle and My Knee

I’m working at home, as I usually do when I have a commission (translations), glued to the computer, making progress and checking on mails, blogs and crazy facebook. I don’t find much time to paint/sketch lately, so today I’m posting something I did a few days ago. These sketches are part of the things I do while waiting for my kids. The ones that can be shown, of course :) I’m lucky there’s no one around and that I find quietness to make them and not being taken as a crazy lady. Sometimes I sketch while I wait in the car (the alcohol bottle was done there, the other sketch while waiting alone).
And I have to announce officially: I’m gone from painting classes :( I have not enough time at the end of the year, and I would also like to find something more “academic”. It’s sad, but, that’s the way it is…

El rincón del psicoanálisis

Este dibujo es del sofá que está en la sala de espera donde mi hijo tiene clases en las tardes, siempre está igual porque más bien lo usan de mesa y de adorno que para sentarse. Perfecto para hacer de modelo. En menos de cuatro sesiones lo terminé. Me gusta cómo quedó. En una hoja de mi pequeño sketchbook (de "The Sketchbook Kit" de A. Colbert y A. Gair que mi esposo me trajo hace un par de años, y que recién estoy aprovechando).

Quiero aprovechar para saludar y agradecer a todas las personas que visitan este pequeño blog, a mis amigos cibernéticos que dejan tan amables comentarios, y que me hacen sentir tan bien con su presencia :) No es muy mi estilo poner este tipo de cosas, pero hoy sentí que hacía falta...

The Shrink's corner

This is the sketch of the couch at the waiting room where my son has classes the afternoons, it's always unaltered because it's more used as a table or decoration than as a seat. Perfect to be a model. I finished it in less than four sessions. I like how it turned out. In one page of my small sketchbook (from A. Colbert & A. Gair's "The Sketchbook Kit", that my husband gave me a couple of years ago, and that I'm now using).

I want to say hello and thank all the people that visit this blog, my friends on the Web who leave very kind comments and who make me feel so well with their pressence :) It's not much of my style to include things like this, but today I felt 'the urge'...

La semana pasada estuvimos en Máncora, un pueblito-balneario al norte del Perú (16 horas por tierra desde Lima). Nos quedamos en un bungalow y la pasamos estupendamente. Fueron unos días maravillosos, familiares (nos hacían mucha falta), aprovechando las vacaciones de los chicos. Hice unos dibujos, que aquí incluyo, y también he puesto algunas fotos (para que juzguen qué tan cercano salió el dibujo), y también algunas otras para que tengan una idea del precioso lugar. Anímicamente, aún estoy allá... mmm

Aquí dejo una vista en 3D de la playa, que hizo mi esposo en Photosynth. Y aquí hay otra vista como dos kilómetros más al sur (sí, caminamos hasta allá con los chicos).

Trip to Mancora Beach

Last week we've been at Mancora, a seaside town in northern Peru (16 hours by bus from Lima). We stayed at a bungalow/small house and had a great time. We had some wonderful, family days (which we needed a lot), taking advantage of school holidays. I made a couple of sketches, included here, and I am also including a few photos (so that you can see how close or not the drawing is), and also some other photos so that you can have an idea of the beautiful place. My spirit is still there... mmm

Here is a 3D view of the beach, made by my husband on Photosynth. And here is another view from about two kilometers to the south of the first one (yes, we walked there with the kids).

Amo a mi profesora

Hemos hecho seminarios sobre teoría del color. Vimos el tema de la rueda de color, los complementarios, los primarios, secundarios, grises neutros y por saturación, y ya no sé cuánta cosa más. La cosa es que ¡hicimos teoría! AMO la teoría, no puedo vivir sin teoría, necesito un marco referencial que me diga qué hacer... y tengo que saber cuáles son las reglas (para luego poder romperlas :), el hecho es que sin teoría mi vida sería miserable, así de simple. Llámenme cuadriculada, inflexible, o lo que sea (no se me ocurre nada más), pero para mí la vida es más simple con receta (si los hijos hubieran nacido con manual*, si el esposo viniera con manual, si tantas cosas vinieran con manual...!)
En fin. He sido feliz en estas últimas clases, pues hubo teoría, y luego hicimos ejercicios para verla funcionando en la práctica. ¡Soy feliz!

I love my teacher

We’ve had seminars about color theory. We’ve seen the color wheel subject, complementary, primary and secondary colors, neutral and saturated grays, and I can’t remember what else. The thing is, we had theory! I LOVE theory, I can’t live without theory, I need a reference framework that tells me what to do… and I need to know the rules (so that I can brake them later :); the fact is that without theory my life would be miserable, as simple as that. Call me rigid, inflexible, or whatever you want (I can’t think of anything else to call me), but life for me is simpler with a recipe (if children came with a manual*, if the husband came with a manual, if so many things in life came with a manual…!)
Well. I’ve been so happy these last few classes because we had theory, and then we practiced to see it at work. I’m so happy!

*PD: en realidad al decir 'manual' me refiero a la teoría, porque los manuales tampoco los amo mucho que digamos.

Segundo óleo

Estoy bastante decepcionada con este óleo. Lo hice en mi clase de pintura, y no lo he firmado porque la profesora ha puesto tantas cosas que no me da la cara para ponerle mi nombre.
En fin, era sólo un ejercicio, y me ha servido para practicar los medios tonos, que creo en algunas partes están bastante aceptables y en otras no tanto. Luego los brillos más grandes los puso la profa, y yo no estoy muy de acuerdo con ellos (el brillo del pie y del cuerpo del jarro), yo puse los brillos de los bordes, esos sí son totalmente de mi responsabilidad.
La textura de la madera tampoco es mía, pero sí el fondo y todas las capas de pintura de la sombra, excepto por la última que también es de la profa :)

Bueno, me voy, a ventilar apasionadamente mi frustración por otra parte!!

Second Oil

I am really dissapointed with this oil. I made it in my painting clases, and I haven't signed it because the teacher has put so much stuff herself that I am embarrassed to put my name as if it were mine. Anyway, it was just an exercise, and it was good to practice the mid values, that I think are quite acceptable in some parts and not so much in others. Then, the stronger lights were put by the teacher, and I am not completely in agreement with them (those on the base and on the body of the jar), I put the lights on the upper borders, those are of my sole accountability.
The wooden texture isn't mine either, but the background is as well as all the layers of paint in the cast shadow, except for the last one which is also the teacher's :)

Well, I'm gone, to passionately air my frustration somewhere else!!

Dos dibujos

Un par de dibujos que hice el mes pasado: el primero, parte de los estudios sobre telas que estuve haciendo en las nuevas clases de pintura. El segundo, parte de un pequeño grupo de dibujos que hice durante las vacaciones pasadas, con algo de la historia del momento. He descubierto ese singular placer de hacer un dibujo, y luego de firmarlo y ponerle la fecha (y hora exacta a veces), escribo algo de lo que lo inspiró o lo que estaba pasando mientras yo lo hacía. Tengo varios de este estilo pero en formato más pequeño en mis agendas... los hago mientras espero a que mis hijos terminen algunas de sus clases en las tardes, para aprovechar en practicar un poco, y no aburrirme... luego es lindo volverlos a ver, y compartirlos con alguien que se alegra de verlos...

Two Sketches

A couple of sketches that I made last month: the first, part of the fabrics/cloth studies that I had been doing in the new painting classes. The second, part of a small group of drawings that I did during the past school vacations, with some of the history of that moment. I have discovered this unique pleasure of sketching, signing and dating (sometimes adding the exact time too), and then writing something about what inspired me or what was happening while I was doing it. I have many sketches in this ‘style’ but in smaller format on my appointment books/diaries… I make them while I wait for my kids to finish their afternoon classes, to take advantage of the time and practice a bit, and not get bored… later it is nice to see them again, and share them with someone who feels happy to see them…

En Camisa de Once Varas

Sí, me metí en camisa de once varas, como dice el dicho. Todos los años me pongo creativa para el cumpleaños de mi hija y hago algo yo misma para la fiesta: un par de veces he hecho la torta decorada (una vez hice una maqueta de tres pisos de las princesas y me salió muy bien, lástima que no encuentro la foto!), otro año hice bocaditos dulces, otro la decoración de la fiesta, y este año se me ocurrió hacer los recuerdos o "sorpresas" como les llamamos en el Perú. Y por supuesto, resultó mucho más difícil y trabajoso de lo que inicialmente se me había ocurrido :)

La idea pasó por varias etapas (inicialmente sólo pensaba hacer una tarjeta de agradecimiento pintada a mano), pero luego llegué al lienzo pintado que muestro en las fotos de este post.

En total hice 17, con el nombre de cada uno de los invitados. Usé cinta de enmascarar para separar el rectángulo central y las tres áreas del fondo, las letras las dibujé de una plantilla (no me tuve suficiente fé, pero sé que podría haberlas hecho totalmente a mano...), e hice plantillas con mis dibujos de mariposas y flores. Todo con pintura acrílica y envuelto en bolsas de celofán.

A mi hija y a las niñas les gustaron mucho, y a sus padres también, así que puedo decir que fueron un éxito. ¡Buena recompensa para el esfuerzo de toda una semana de trabajo!

Getting myself into a mess

Yes, I got myself into a mess... Every year I turn somewhat creative for my daughter’s birthday and make something for the party with my own hands: a couple of times I’ve made a decorated cake (I once made a three stories model/maquette/fake cake with the Princesses theme and it turned out pretty well, it’s a pity I can’t find the photos!), another year I made the sweet appetizers/canapés (or finger food, I’m not sure about what word to use here, but canapés is pretentious for what the results were :), another time I made the party decorations, and this year I decided to make the party favors (“surprises” as we call them in Peru). And of course, it turned out to be a lot more difficult and hard work than what I initially thought :)

The idea went through various stages: I initially thought of only making a hand painted thank-you-card, but later it ended up in the hand painted canvas shown on the photos of this post.

I made 17 of them, with the name of every guest. I used masking tape to separate the central rectangle and the three areas of the background; I drew the letters with a stencil (I had not enough faith in myself on this part, but I know I could have written them completely without the stencil …), and I made templates out of my drawings of butterflies and flowers. Everything was made with acrylic paint and wrapped in cellophane bags.

My daughter and the girls liked them a lot, and so did their parents, so I can say they were a success. That’s a good rewarding for a whole week of hard work!

En diversos blogs he visto que los artistas pintan lo que tienen en sus casas, cosas comunes y de todos los días. Otros, compran cosas que les gustan especialmente con el fin de pintarlas. Eso para mí fue todo un descubrimiento (es que... no soy muy consumista, creo que si existiera la reencarnación, debo de haber sido hippie en otra época. O quizás simplemente tacaña, y se me quedó :).

Bueno, la cosa es que me gustó mucho un frasco que vi en una tienda, y gracias a esta inspiración que menciono, terminé comprándolo. También tenía dónde ponerlo. Estuve buscando varias posibilidades para pintarlo, y quería además incluir una de las conchas que estuve pintando hace un tiempo (en el dibujo original se ve que la concha estuvo allí al principio, pero después me di cuenta que no funcionaba la composición).

Y para terminar la composición, no encontraba algo que "me llenara el ojo". Finalmente se me ocurrió incluir unas pepas (semillas) de lúcuma que tengo guardadas por un par de años (quería saber si su lustre permanece o se deteriora con el tiempo: y permanece!). Estéticamente me encantan, y sabía que no iban a ser difíciles de pintar.

Por el contrario, el adorno verde del fondo sabía que me costaría, y dicho y hecho, creo que es lo menos logrado en esta pintura (por lo menos el borde). Quizás si hiciera caso a las cosas que leo y dejara reposar la pintura y con paciencia la corrigiera... pero no, a lo hecho pecho, se acabó, paso la hoja y a seguir adelante. Yo no pinto lo mismo dos veces, no leo el mismo libro dos veces, no veo la misma película dos veces (bueno, las de Disney sí, ni modo)... he dicho!*

*Mentira, eso era antes, ahora me he flexibilizado un poco, pero me provocó tanto poner eso :) Ay! me caigo tan bien cuando estoy de buen humor... qué bueno, porque hoy ha sido un día de esos: perrunos...

PD: Perdón por las fotos. El formato es un poco grande para el scanner y no tuve más opción que tomar fotos (y parece que como fotógrafa me moriría de hambre...)

Still Life
....................

I have seen on a series of blogs that artists paint what they have at home, common and everyday stuff. Others, buy things they like with the special goal of painting them. That was a whole discovery to me (it’s just that… I’m not that into consuming; I think that if reincarnation existed, I must have been a hippie in some other time. Or maybe just cheap, and it stayed with me :)

Well, the thing is I liked a lot a jar I saw at the store, and thanks to this aforementioned inspiration, I ended up buying it. I also had where to put it. I was trying many possibilities to paint it, and I also wanted to include one of the seashells that I have been painting lately (in the original drawing the seashell can be seen at the beginning, but later I realized that it didn’t work in the composition).

And to finish the composition, I didn’t find anything that pleased me. I finally thought of using a few lucuma seeds that I had stored for a couple of years (I wanted to know if they keep/loose luster with time: it stays!). I loved them aesthetically, and I knew they were not going to be difficult to paint.

On the other hand, I knew the green background decoration was going to be tough, and it was. I think it’s the worse part of the painting (or at least it’s edges). Maybe, if I’d follow the things I read and let the painting rest for a while and correct it patiently… but no, what’s done is done, it’s finished, new page and keep going. I don’t paint the same thing twice, I don’t read the same book twice, I don’t watch the same movie twice (well, except for Disney’s, whatever)… period!

*That’s not true, that was true before, now I’m somewhat more flexible, but I couldn’t resist the temptation to include that :) I like myself so much when I’m in a good mood… such a good thing after a not so happy day…

PS: I apologize for the photos. The painting’s size is a little too large for the scanner and I had no choice but to take pictures (and it seems that I would starve to death as a photographer…)

Nuevas Clases de Pintura

¡Cómo se pasa el tiempo! No puedo creer que ya hayan pasado 10 días desde mi último post!

Bueno, han pasado bastantes cosas en casa, los chicos estuvieron de vacaciones una semana más de lo planeado porque el gobierno lo decretó para evitar mayores contagios de la gripe AH1N1, así que la cosa estuvo movidita por acá con los dos enanos :)

Hoy recomenzamos la rutina, pero con la diferencia de que voy ahora a otras clases de pintura. Las otras no estaban mal, pero sentía que le faltaba un poco de dinamismo. Acá tengo más dinamismo, vamos a ver cómo nos va.

La profesora revisó mis trabajos (los que he ido poniendo aquí más otro nuevo que todavía no termino), y le gustaron, me hizo un par de comentarios de los cuales ya tomé nota*, y me preguntó qué quería hacer. Y, además de las conchas marinas, me está interesando por el momento hacer telas, y pliegues y sombras, así que eso hice hoy. Las telas eran estampadas y tenían textura, así que me resultó bastante difícil observar con claridad las sombras y los contrastes. Fue un buen ejercicio. Aquí dejo el resultado de mi trabajo de hoy.

*Tengo la tendencia a pintar los fondos siguiendo el contorno de las formas del primer plano, y eso se nota, y no se ve bien. Me recomienda que el trazo de los fondos sea independiente de lo que tengo en el primer plano. Y luego, tengo que trabajar más los contrastes y valores de luz/sombra en mis pinturas.

New Painting Classes

Times goes by so fast! I can’t believe that 10 days have already passed since my last post!

Well, many things have been going on at home, kids had one more week of vacation because the president decided it in order to avoid more AH1N1 swine flu contagions, so things were a little bit moved around here with the kids :)

Today we restarted our routine, but the difference is that now I’m attending to new painting classes. The first ones were not bad, but I felt that I needed some more dynamism. Now I’ve got more of that, let’s see how it goes…

The new teacher reviewed my works (the ones that I have been posting here, plus one new one in progress), and she liked them. She gave me a couple of comments which I have already taken note of* and asked me what I wanted to do. And, in addition to seashells, I’m feeling attracted for the moment to cloths and pleats and shadows, so that’s what I did today. The cloths had a print and were textured, so it was really difficult for me to clearly notice the shadows and contrasts. It was a good exercise. Here I’m including the results of today’s work.

*I have a tendency to paint the backgrounds following the contour of the shapes in the foreground, and that can be noticed, and it doesn’t look good. She recommends me to avoid doing this, the background strokes can be independent from the foreground objects. And also, I have to work harder on contrasts and light/shadow values on my paintings.

Mi primer óleo

Este es mi primer ejercicio de pintura con óleo. Según lo que he leído últimamente, lo hice "alla prima", es decir, de principio a fin sin parar, en una sola "sentada". En realidad lo comencé en la clase de pintura: allí hice el dibujo de las cosas que llevé, decidí, junto con la profesora, sobre los colores del fondo y del primer plano (me preocupaba qué colores usar, si ya estaba empleando complementarios en las figuras. - La respuesta para el fondo fue usar todos los colores usados en un degradado de luz, y para el primer plano blanco. Pero yo le puse un poquitín de color, porque blanco puro me parecía demasiado contraste).

Luego de terminar el dibujo, mi profesora me hizo pasar una especie de aguada de los colores que iba a usar después sobre cada zona correspondiente: aguarrás con un poco de óleo de cada color. La idea es que esta aguada cubra todo el lienzo, como para "curarlo".

Al terminar la clase sólo tenía eso, puras "aguadas", y la siguiente clase tenía que ser el 4 de agosto (esta semana celebramos las fiestas Patrias y no hubo clases). Mi temperamento desesperadín no iba a poder resistir tanto tiempo sin ver algo terminado, así que en casa lo terminé al 99% (hoy acabo de firmarlo y de cubrir un poco de los blancos en el reflejo del frasco azul). Fue toda una experiencia, un trance total. Me pareció difícil, y decidí que podía y debía terminarlo ese mismo día, porque no iba a tener ningún tipo de ayuda y porque igual no iba a poder esperar hasta la siguiente clase.

This is my first painting exercise with oil paintings. As per what I have read recently, I did it “alla prima”, it is, non stop from beginning to end, in one and only “sitting”. I actually started it at painting class: there I did the drawing of the things I took there; I decided, together with the teacher, about the background and foreground colors (I was worried about what colors to use, because I was already using complementary colors on the figures. –The answer for the background was to use the same colors used in a value gradient, and for the foreground, white. But I added a little bit of color, because pure white seemed to me like too much contrast).

After finishing the drawing, the teacher told me to add a sort of gouache of the colors that I was going to use later, over every corresponding zone: turpentine with some oil of each color. The idea is that this gouache cover the whole canvas, so as to “cure” it.

After the class all I had done was that, only “gouaches”, and the next class was scheduled for Aug. 4 (this week we have celebrated Peru’s Hollidays and we had no classes). My frenzied/desperate spirit was not going to be able to resist that long without seeing it finished, so I finished 99% of it at home (today I just signed it and covered a little bit of white on the reflex of the blue jar). It was quite an experience, a total “trance”. It was difficult, and I decided that I could and should finish that same day, because I was not going to have any kind of help and because anyway I was not going to be able to wait until the next class!

Me pregunto si alguien ya se dio cuenta de que las fotos de referencia las saqué de la Web... bueno, en todo caso son sólo dibujos por el placer (y la práctica) de hacerlos...

Me fascina el tema de las conchas marinas, y estoy descubriendo lo difíciles que son (para mí) dibujarlas, y más aún, pintarlas. La caracola en blanco y negro que pongo ahora, por ejemplo, la escogí porque pensé que sería fácil terminarla rápidamente, ¡CRASO ERROR!, es el caracol más difícil que he hecho hasta ahora, quizás también se deba a su posición en diagonal (ni frontal ni
de perfil). Y conseguir algo que se parezca al dorado tampoco fue poca cosa.

Pero como me suele pasar, estoy contenta con los resultados, no serán perfectos ni mucho menos, pero es todo lo que puedo dar (por lo menos, por ahora :)

I wonder if by now anyone has noticed that the seashells reference photos come from the Internet… well, anyway these are only drawings for the pleasure of making them (and for the practice they involve)…

I am fascinated with the seashells theme, and I am discovering how difficult they are as drawing, and especially, as painting subjects. I chose the black & white shell included now, for example, because I thought it was going to be easy to finish quickly, BIG MISTAKE! It’s the most difficult seashell that I have done so far, maybe because of it’s ‘in diagonal’ position (not frontal, not side view). And achieving something a little bit looking like gold wasn’t peanuts either. But as it usually happens to me, I’m happy with the results. They’re far away from perfect, but that’s all I can give (at least, for now :)
